Alternator
Some Tech stuff:
All alternators are "Internal Regulator/ Internal fan" = "IR/IF"

Stripping
A good brushing with kerosene as you go will keep things a little neater.
The following is a step by step of a strip refurbishment of a typical alternator (this one being a G11 vintage).
Thumbnail pictures give a clue to the featured pic, for those with slow speed connections who want to jump steps.
Back Removed
This picture shows the metal cap removed, exposing the brush carrier, regulator and bridge rectifier. Retaining screws have already been removed for disassembly.
Brush Holder Removed
First cab off the rank is to remove the brush carrier
Regulator Removed
Leaves only the bridge rectifier to come
Bridge and Insulators Removed
In preparation for general disassembly. Now where did I put my home made stepped bearing remover all those years ago?
Slip Rings Exposed
Little buggers aren't they! These are scored from use and will need turning in a lathe to get them back to even, if there is enough meat left on them.
Brushes Up Close and Personal
Here is a close up of the brushes and their carrier. The silicone rubber cover has been pulled off...
Before We Get Into More Stripping
| Pays to test the parts so replacements can be ordered.First step is visual inspection of the bridge rectifier. Oh dear I see a blackened diode terminal | ||||
| and the other side is blistered. I will have to test that with a multimeter. Damnit my good meter is not here, a cheapy will have to do. | ||||
| Firstly what are the important bits: Click on the pic for an explanation | ||||
| Second task is to test the diodes | Using a multimeter to test the diodes on the +ve and negative bridges | |||
